The STEP (Skills to Empower) Foundation, a UK Registered Charity was set up in early 2006 to help in alleviating some of the devastation and suffering in post-Tsunami Sri Lanka by providing skills and training, facilities and resources and, through this, empowering people to help themselves. Enabling them to build a better future for themselves and their communities "…the driving force behind the STEP project is a commitment to the concept of empowering people to help themselves – to enable them to build a better future for them and for their communities." 2007 has been another very successful year in the collaboration between the STEP Foundation and the SFFL – the Small Fishers Federation of Sri Lanka. A number of new projects have been started, but much of the year has also been spent on developing and consolidating the foundations laid during our first year of operation. The whole empowerment programme, the very basis of STEP’s activities, is developing fast and has taken on new challenges. In this, the STEP Foundation has been very much involved in bringing necessary skills to the management and senior staff of SFFL to enable them to encompass the new developments and programmes in which they are currently involved or hoping to take on board in the next phases. |
