English Teaching |

|
In seeking job opportunities, a good working usage of English is an essential key into many of the worthwhile positions. In IT and Hospitality for example, both areas in which our Partners, The Small Fishers’ Federation have three Training Centres across Sri Lanka, the ability to speak English is near essential. We have continued to send English teachers to run Courses for the students. Following on from Kim Greig’s excellent achievements from September to December 2006, Pat Clarke and Bernie Waring visited in May 2007. Sadly, Bernie had to return after just a month following an unfortunate bus accident though we are happy to say he is recovering well. Pat was left working doubly hard and we are grateful for her many achievements during her stay at Liyangolla and Bandagiriya. During the course of the year we have sent out people who are not only trained teachers but who have proven organising skills at the highest levels. Following Pat and Bernie’s recommendations STEP agreed with SFFL to take a longer-term approach of capacity-building. From now on we will be concentrating on advising, monitoring and developing English courses which a trained team of Sri Lankans will be able to teach. Advertisements have been prepared to recruit three retired English teachers in Sri Lanka. They together with three existing wardens, one at each centre, will be trained with the help of STEP, to become instructors, using multimedia resources. |
