The Small Fishers Federation of Sri Lanka has enjoyed enormous and rapid growth in the years since its inception in 1992. In addition to the Training Centres, and Micro Banks it runs two environmental centres where children from all over the Country (some 80 a day) learn about ecological priorities and seacology – lessons designed to protect the fishing habitat and the wider environment. A huge post-tsunami programme pushed the organisation even faster and further. Land was found, planning permission obtained, electricity and water brought in and 1400 new homes were built after the disaster and opened in 10 months. Extended boat yards and the building of a new hospital was added to their activities.

This explosive growth brought with it problems of management and control. STEP, working with experts in the UK have devised Management systems to help SFFL cope with this growth and equip it for future expansion.
