Skills To Empower Programme (STEP)

English Teaching

As part of a programme aimed at giving youngsters from some of the most disadvantaged areas in Sri Lanka the chance of a real career, our partner organisation – The Small Fishers Federation (SFFL) - have set up three Centres to provide training for I.T. and for the hospitality industry.

Much of this and other work of the SFFL has been made possible by the unstinting financial backing and support of Terre des Hommes, an NGO based in the Netherlands operating through its offices in Colombo.

In both I.T. and Hospitality the ability to speak English is, understandably, near essential. To provide this, STEP has started English language teaching, sending out qualified teachers to two of the three main Training Centres and hopes to extend this shortly. With the long term hope of training a core of 'in house' English teachers STEP has also introduced, and began training, what they hope will eventually become a core of English teachers based in the various Training Centres in Sri Lanka
