Due to low production and low productivity in the fisheries sector there are no new
jobs emerging in the coastal districts. Insufficient extension
services, lack of input and lack of market facilities are the direct
causes for low productivity. This has directly affected to family
economy and the female additional income earning process. The root
course for lack of job opportunities for women and youth has been
identified as lack of skills. To address this problem, vocational
training centres or skills development centres have not been set up
focusing women and youth. The financial institutions have focused
only businessmen and rural elite for their financial operation.
Women and youth have not been identified as trustworthy person for
bankable credit. Only 6% females had applied for loans at Banking
institutions. Most of the rural financial institutions
are suffering from lack of money for investment. The following
problems have been the cause for economic imbalance in the coastal
and inlands fishing districts.
·
Shortage of entrepreneurs
·
Resource availability, man power potential and skills training have
not given priority
·
No credit and no access to credit institutions
·
Absence of marketing organizations
·
No pre-planning or assessment on potential of women and youth
· Industrial sector is not properly organized except the textile
industry. Stagnation in the Fisheries and animal husbandry sector has
caused a shortfall of job opportunities for the youth. |
