According to the health authorities in the coastal districts, 48
percent of children aged fewer than 5 are suffering from
malnutrition and related diseases. The mother’s situation is also
the same. Ignorance of the people about food habits and food
preparation malnutrition and related diseases are rampant in the
area. Consumption of vitamin rich food and milk is very low. No
properly organized health facilities are available in coastal districts.
There are government hospitals but most of the hospitals lack
doctors and medicines. 69 percent of the fisheries populations in the
coastal districts are without proper toilet facilities. It has been
estimated that 22 percent of diseases are caused due to water
contamination. Worm disease and stomach ailments have accounted for
69 percent of the fisheries population. It is observed that there is
no proper health education programme in the sector. Lack of
properly trained Village health workers and lack of facilities for
them are the main problems. |
