Anuradha Wickramasinghe, Chairman of Small Fishers Federation of
Sri Lanka (SFFL) and graduate of Coady International Institute, Canada, founded in 1991 SFFL,
a fisher folk based non-governmental organization, which represents 22%
of Sri Lanka’s small-scale fisher folk Communities in the island. He
served from 1981 to 1990 as the Executive Director of social forestry,
water resource management and conservation program and mobilized more
than 1,200 community leaders on the forest conservation campaign in hill country and dry zone of Sri Lanka.
Anuradha has 25 years
of experience in community based natural resource management. He
developed a fisher folk community-based coastal resource management
program in 1994 and set up the Mangrove Conservation and Demonstration
Centre in Pambala Lagoon, the first of its kind in the South Asian
region, along with the Kiralakele Mangrove Biological Garden. Among the
awards he has received are “The people based technology award” from
south East Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute of the St. Francis
Xavier University of
Philippines for his development action plan on ‘community based water
resource management and the Seacology prize as island conservationist
for his outstanding effort on mangrove resource conservation in 2001. |
